Painting My Mantra
It has always been very important to me that I live my life with intention. I have aimed to make intentional choices about the work I do, the relationships I cultivate, and the way I spend my time.
This practice comes with challenges and failures. Anyone who has tried to live a values driven life knows you never live those values all day everyday. Last year though, it struck me that I would like to summarize my values into a manifesto. It is unlikely you will live into your intention fully, if you aren’t clear with yourself about what is most important to you. I journaled for a while, wrote a longer manifesto, but eventually distilled it down to this mantra: “choose intentionally to love and to do meaningful work.”
It’s reassuring to have something to to guide me as I make decisions or just a reminder in the busyness of life about what I really value. While on creative retreat last week, I decided it would be nice to create paintings with my mantra to have as a reminder. I made two versions, one to keep at my work desk and one to keep in my painting studio at home. I have since framed them and am thrilled to have a little reminder, when I see them.
